Under the Influence Tour hit Toronto last night, and I was able to attend courtesy of Most Dope. The show was held at one of the biggest outdoor venues in Toronto, which is infamous for holding Drake’s annual OVO Fest. Upon entering the parking lot, there were numerous people sitting outside their cars, smoking and drinking, becoming “under the influence” of some drug. Walking up to the front gates, I instantly see numerous people wearing shirts supporting their favorite artists (in this case, I’d say 8/10 were wearing Mac t-shirts, the other 2/10 were wearing Wiz shirts).
Opening the show was Boaz. While I am unfamiliar with his music (aside from his few collaborations with Mac), the music was easy listening and got the crowd bumping their heads.
Up next was Chevy Woods. I am a huge Chevy fan, so I thoroughly enjoyed his performance. However, the crowd didn’t seem to appreciate Chevy’s energy, which was disappointing to see.
Chiddy Bang came up next. I’d say that out of all the opening acts, Chiddy Bang were the only ones who got the crowd off their feet, up and dancing. While many people did not know their songs, Chiddy’s beats and energy made the crowd want to be fans. They even interacted with the crowd by doing a freestyle with crowd-chosen words.
Schoolboy Q couldn’t make it across the border, which was very sad to hear because I was looking forward to his performance.
Last to open was Kendrick Lamar. He seemed to be a crowd favorite (probably because he was the most known act). I missed the second half of his performance because I had to attend to other business, but Kendrick had the crowd rapping along, and chanting “fuck that” during ADHD.
After about a 30 minute intermission, the lights dimmed, and a video of baby Mac rapping appeared on stage. As “Best Day Ever” started playing, Mac enters from the corner of the stage, with Quentin (who was his hype man for the night), Jimmy and Dave following. After performing the rest of “BDE,” Mac introduces himself to Toronto, welcomes the crowd to Under the Influence, and quickly gets the crowd jumping up and down performing an old favorite, “Knock Knock.” Mac’s set list went back and forth with favorites from KIDS to BDE to Macadelic. He told the crowd a love story with the trio of “The Mourning After,” “Lucky Ass Bitch,” and “Diamonds and Gold,” and then quickly turned up the place with performing “Pink Slime.” Mac Miller took a quick break by lying on the floor after “Frick Park Market,” which prepared him to get personal when performing the love song “Missed Calls.” Mac ended his part of the show by performing “Donald Trump,” which had the crowd jumping up and down.
I’ve seen my fair share of Mac Miller concerts, but this performance was one of my favorites. While it may be the 15,000+ crowd, the improved light show, the smoke effects, the balloons and confetti flying around, absolutely nothing beats Mac’s energry. I’ve said this many times before, but Mac is one of my all time favorite performers. He connects with the crowd, to the point where everyone is feeding off of Mac’s energry. He knows how to put on a show, which makes everyone feel better about the amount of money they just dropped to see him (and I say this because where I was sitting, the people around me paid $175 for their seat, which made me feel terrible that I got those seats for free).
After a quick stage change, and the live band coming out, Wiz Khalifa hit the stage about 15 minutes after Mac. I’ve seen Wiz perform before, and he too is one of my favorites as his facial expressions are just priceless. You can tell that Wiz has fun when he’s on stage, he enjoys performing. With an American flag hanging from his mic, and a fan blowing from below, Wiz opened the show with “Cabin Fever,” and then performed favorites from that same titled mixtape, as well as Kush & OJ, Taylor Allderdice, Rolling Papers, and Mac & Devin go to High School. Wiz even went hella old school and performed hits from Burn After Rolling and Flight School. Wiz definitely had all the girls going crazy, hitting the stage shirtless and teasing us all by pulling his pants down and sticking his tongue out. Wiz ended the show with the bangers, “Black and Yellow,” “Work Hard Play Hard.” Finally, Wiz performed “ONIFC,” by which he was joined on stage with fellow members of Taylor Gang as well as Mac Miller.
Overall, Under the Influence was an amazing show. I can safely say, there was not a single sober soul in the crowd, everyone was definitely under the influence. Back stage was filled with Toronto celebrities, such as Drake and The Weeknd, as well as local artist TFHouse, bloggers Karen Civil & Karla Moy, and many many more famous names. Its a shame that not all of Most Dope crossed the border and attended the show, as well as Schoolboy Q being missed, but it was still a summer show that should not be missed.
